The Columbus Fire Department extends a massive thank you to its neighbors at Columbus Chemical Industries (CCI) for their generous donation of critical firefighting equipment.
CCI donated four shut-off valves, four smooth bore nozzles and four fog nozzles, all from Elkhart Brass. This new equipment is now active on the department's primary 1 3/4 attack lines, the main hoses crews pull first at a fire.
Why this equipment matters
In firefighting, every second counts. The shut-off valves give firefighters additional speed and flexibility at the end of the hose line. Firefighters can now switch nozzle tips instantly without needing the fire engine to shut down the pressure. If crews need more hose to reach a fire deeper inside a building, they can safely shut off the valve at the nozzle, attach extra sections and keep moving forward in seconds.
Different fires require different tactics, and CCI has provided two key nozzle options. The smooth bore nozzles shoot a tight, solid column of water. They knock down the fire directly without creating dangerous steam, keeping the air cooler and clearer for crews. Fog nozzles create a wide, fine mist. This pattern is used for rapidly absorbing heat, protecting firefighters from flames in incidents containing natural gas leaks, and applying foam.
The department expressed gratitude for CCI's partnership and commitment to keeping the Columbus area safe. Because of this donation, firefighters are better equipped and ready to respond efficiently.
