Two cooling centers are open in Beaver Dam during normal hours while residents deal with extreme heat warnings.
Prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity can pose serious health risks, particularly for older adults, young children, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions, Beaver Dam Fire Chief Michael Wesle said in a statement.
The two cooling centers in Beaver Dam are at the Beaver Dam Community Library, 311 N. Spring St., from 9 to 7 p.m., and The Watermark, 209 S. Center St., from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Intense heat is set to hit the Erie area during the week of June 28 with temperatures reaching the upper 80s and low 90s. Here are tips to stay cool.
The Beaver Dam Fire Department recommends the following safety measures during extreme heat conditions:
Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages.
Limit outdoor activity: Try to schedule strenuous activities for early morning or evening hours when temperatures are lower.
Stay cool indoors: Use air conditioning whenever possible. If your home is not air-conditioned, seek out public buildings like the designated cooling shelters.
Wear appropriate clothing: Choose lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing.
Check on others: Regularly check on neighbors, family members, and friends, especially those who may be more vulnerable.
Never leave children or pets in vehicles: Temperatures inside a parked vehicle can rise rapidly to dangerous levels within minutes.
