Ho-Chunk Rep. Kristin White Eagle explains the newly unveiled panel Monday to visiting members of the three Sauk and Meskwaki tribes which make up the descendants of Algonquian people first developed in eastern woodlands before migrating to the upper Midwest during conflict and forced farther west by the U.S. government. The interpretive panel will be displayed along the riverfront in Sauk City as an educational tool describing the history of the Sauk people, White Eagle said.

Adrian Pushetonequa, of Meskwaki near Tama, Iowa, speaks about the history of the Sauk people and their migration, fueled by the French seeking war with them throughout the east and upper Midwest, before the eventual formation of three Sac and Fox tribes in Iowa, Oklahoma and Kansas after forced removals by the U.S. government. "Our people did not keep journals," Pushetonequa said. "The only journals I know were kept by the French. They were always writing about us."
