The Portage Canal between Adams and DeWitt streets is a hive of activity in mid-July 2016, with the new Columbia County administration building, left, going up on the northwest side of the canal, the Health and Human Services building going up on the southeast side of the canal, and a dredging crew finishing up the process of cleaning out accumulated sediment from the canal.

November 2014 -- Building bonding approved
Portage Mayor Bill Tierney and Columbia County Board Chairman Vern Gove vow cooperation between the county and the city, after the County Board on Nov. 12, 2014 approved borrowing up to $45.51 million for an array of projects that will include two new county buildings along the Portage Canal and renovation of the courthouse for court-related use only.

Columbia County's new administration building takes shape, as workers continue framing the walls, including window openings, for the three-story structure. Starting in early 2016, Portage's downtown skyline underwent major changes, as Columbia County undertook its biggest building project ever.
COURTHOUSE WORK NEARS COMPLETION
A crew pours a fresh asphalt surface Tuesday evening at the Columbia County Courthouse, 400 DeWitt St., where a major renovation project is nearing completion. This lot, with its driveway on West Pleasant Street, will lead to employee parking and the new sally port at the courthouse's rear. The county's court-related offices, which have been temporarily located in the new Health and Human Services Building at 111 E. Mullett St., are scheduled to move into the remodeled courthouse at the end of this month.
Furniture Locast
Ron Locast, project manager for Columbia County's building project, displays samples of flooring and furniture finishes to the Columbia County Board's Ad Hoc Building Committee on Wednesday, to aid in the panel's decisions regarding furniture for the courthouse that is under renovation.
Building Field
Columbia County Supervisor Adam Field of Portage displays the holiday gift that County Board Chairman Vern Gove presented to all supervisors -- a group photo taken on August 18, when the county's building project was dedicated. Field raised several questions Wednesday about cost overruns for the building project.
