When Trina McVicker interviews job applicants at Holtz Builders Inc., she goes beyond reviewing their skills and experience — she pays even more attention to whether candidates fit the company culture. The family-owned general contractor prides itself on a culture where collaboration, advancement, community involvement and just plain fun combine to attract and keep top talent.
“Our core values are honesty, transparency and integrity,” McVicker said. As Director of Human Resources and Community Development, McVicker recruits team members who will live by those values and thrive in the HBI environment. “We bring people on board who enjoy being part of a team and working collaboratively towards something meaningful,” she said. “In every interview, we tell people, ‘We want to make sure you are happy to come to work every day.’”

Culture of caring
“We truly care about our employees,” McVicker said. HBI leadership demonstrates this concern for employees by being approachable, emphasizing safety and preserving company culture and values even as the firm continues to expand. “We do not lead from behind a desk,” she said. “We’re out talking to employees, greeting them in the morning, asking them about their weekend and visiting job sites to see employees face-to-face.” This in-person connection lets employees know they are valued, seen and heard, McVicker said.
The chance to advance
HBI employees have opportunities to gain experience and advance within the company, according to McVicker. “It’s important to us to reward good work, and we get great work from our employees,” she said. Mark Crowley is a vivid example of employee advancement. Crowley started working with HBI over the summers while home from college. Upon graduation, he worked as a Project Manager and Superintendent then moved into the role of Vice President of Field Operations before stepping into his current position of Executive Vice President. “We love to promote from within,” McVicker said.
Community involvement
Philanthropy is part of the company’s structure, according to Tom Holtz, HBI CEO. “Giving back is second nature to our organization. It’s a means by which we can support the surrounding communities that have supported us throughout the 30 years we have been in business,” Holtz said.
HBI donates to a wide range of community organizations and causes, everything from hosting a blood drive at the Lake Delton facility to providing funding for athletic groups, a hospice agency, Boys and Girls Clubs, food drives, golf tournaments and more. Along with providing health insurance, paid holidays and vacation, and a 401(k) plan, HBI gives employees eight hours of paid time to volunteer per year.
