COLUMBUS — Mayville opened its volleyball season with two convincing wins at Columbus Thursday.

Mayville dispatched the hosts with a 25-12, 25-19 win before taking care of Marshall with a 25-17, 25-16 victory. Kirsten Muche led Mayville with eight kills while Tonya Kollmansberger added seven.

"I was very pleased to see how well the girls played," Mayville coach Beth Borchardt said. "They hustled and communicated well as a team."

Kasey Schwartzmiller dished out 16 assists and Jenna Nehls added nine. Mayville (2-0) visits New Holstein Tuesday.

RANDOLPH — Alyssa De Young's 10 kills and 10 digs helped Central Wisconsin Christian take Thursday's 26-28, 25-19, 25-21, 26-24 Northern Trailways volleyball win at Randolph.

"We were up 24-20 in the first game and ended up losing," CWC coach Dan Ten Napel said. "I was pleased with how we played really hard after that.

"Our defense was pretty good. We need work on setting up our attack."

Megan Pickhardt led Randolph with 12 kills and four blocks. Courtney Retzlaff added six kills and three aces while Chelsey Omen had 21 assists.

"It was a tough match for us this early," Randolph coach Jeff Kohlbeck said. "CWC is way improved.

"We had too many passing errors and we couldn't get into our offense. I'd rather have a loss like this early where we can clean up our mistakes."

Anna Hofman put down 10 kills and Anneke Vanbaren had four assists plus eight digs for the Crusaders. Nikki Posthuma had 20 assists and three aces while Lisa O'Connor had 12 assists.

Emily Braaksma and Kim Alsum each had three blocks for CWC (2-0, 1-0 North), which visits Markesan Thursday.

Katie Patzlsberger had 17 digs for the Rockets (1-1, 0-1), who head to Saturday's UW-Platteville Invitational.

CAMBRIA — Despite big nights from Brittany Bylsma and Arianna Wiersma, Cambria-Friesland dropped Thursday's 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 25-19 Northern Trailways volleyball opener to visiting Valley Christian.

Bylsma had 13 kills and 7.5 blocks. Wiesma added 16 kills and 15 digs.

"There were a lot of little mistakes tonight that really cost us," C-F coach Kim Graham said. "We have some work to do before next week."

Kayla Wiersma had 37 assists and Kelsey Pekarske had 23 digs for the Toppers (1-1, 0-1 North), who take part in Saturday's Belleville Invitational.

FALL RIVER — Rachael Dauman had four blocks, four kills and six digs for Fall River as the Pirates opened Southern Trailways play with a sweep of Abundant Life Thursday.

Melissa Koenig added seven assists and six aces in the 25-22, 25-7, 25-21 victory.

"We played really well tonight," Fall River coach Jenny Quade said. "Our serving was good and it was nice to see the girls keep fighting and come out on top."

Fall River (1-1, 1-0 South) heads to the Belleville Invitational Saturday.
